The Republican Party in Taylor County hosted a fund raiser tonight with Oliver North as its keynote speaker and Comanche High School senior Colten Jones was not only in attendance, but also joined North for dinner before the U.S. military hero spoke.

“I didn’t know a whole lot about him before tonight.  I guess I really didn’t pay a lot of attention in history class, but I discovered right away that he and I believe in the same things…love of country and what it takes for a country to be successful…that there are so many people who don’t understand what it takes to keep this country strong.

“Really, his loyalty to the country and to the people who support our military was the main thing I took away from the night. He wasn’t going to back down from day one till now. He believes what he believes, and he stands by it. I like that. He won’t buckle under pressure. He didn’t then, and I don’t think he will now.”

When I asked Colten for something Ollie had to say about Reagan, he smiled that slow smile and said simply, “You can learn a lot about a man by the way he eats his jelly beans.”

That meant that Colten Jones had a great night!
