• Gus the Gnome and the CHS Maidens

    Written by Kyli Cotten

I am pleased to say that the 2012-2013 Maiden basketball season has officially begun for my teammates and me. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the way it has started off so far and couldn’t be having more fun either!

I can honestly say that there is no other team in the state of Texas quite like ours. We’re always having a good time whenever we’re traveling together, and we are proud to include a new member to our crazy team: Gus the gnome.

Gus was an idea that sprung from senior guard Emily Cullers’ wild imagination. She decided that we needed a traveling companion and what would be better for that job than a gnome?!

I don’t think we all took her very seriously until she actually ordered Gus and introduced us to him after practice one day. We weren’t really sure what use we would have for a plastic gnome at first, but we all quickly came to adore the little guy!

We now have guidelines and rules established for Gus’ protection and well being.

On every game day someone is assigned the privilege of taking care of Gus. The responsibilities entail making sure Gus gets on and off the bus safely and that he is not dropped, stolen, etc.

Also at away games, Gus fulfills his need to explore by going through the opposing school’s campus and taking pictures everywhere he can. Then, Gus joins us in our pre-game routine where he retires to his reserved spot on the bench during the game.

So far Gus has brought us good luck, and we can’t wait to see that tradition continue! If you would like to keep up with his crazy antics you can follow him on Instagram under the username “gusthegnome”!  Or, you can keep up with our album of him on Facebook.

The Maidens and Gus hope to see you at a game this season!

    About Fredda Jones

Fredda Davis Jones was raised “in the country” in Comanche County and learned very early that creativity and innovation are traits that can flourish even in small-town Texas and that with enough effort, indeed nothing is impossible, including being married to the same man for over 40 years! Rickey and Fredda have 2 children, 5 grandchildren, and a crazy life that includes sitting in the bleachers several times a week. The rest of her time is spent creating great content for texansunited.com and marketing small-town Texas.
