Stephenville, Texas 76401
Erath County, Texas was established in 1856 and named in honor of Legislator George B. Erath of frontier military fame. Certain information on Erath can be found in The View From The Old Oak Tree by Fredda Davis Jones.
In 1936, a series of monuments was erected around the state in celebration of the Texas Centennial, and Stephenville’s arches graced the Erath and Washington Street area.
By the 1960’s the monument hindered the need to widen the streets and was set to be destroyed. Thankfully, there were those citizens who protested and it was decided to simply move the two pieces so that they set at an angle, making room for the now larger vehicles to simply travel between them at the crossroads of Erath Street and the 600 block of West Washington Street.
Today a historical marker stands proudly with the arches and is well worth your read. Erath himself is an interesting study for those who love frontier history.
