Rattlesnake Gap School

About Fredda Jones

Fredda Davis Jones was raised “in the country” in Comanche County and learned very early that creativity and innovation are traits that can flourish even in small-town Texas and that with enough effort, indeed nothing is impossible, including being married to the same man for over 40 years! Rickey and Fredda have 2 children, 5 grandchildren, and a crazy life that includes sitting in the bleachers several times a week. The rest of her time is spent creating great content for texansunited.com and marketing small-town Texas.

Hi! Saw the photo of the Rattlesnake Gap school. Would love to know when this photo was taken. My Great-Great Grandparents – Jefferson Kelley and Beulah Pearl McCay-Kelley lived in Comanche County in the 1880s till mid 1900s. Four of their children were born in Comanche County. However, their second child (my grandmother Tessie Ann Kelley) always said she was born in Rising Star (just across the county line in Eastland County. She said it was called Rattle Snake Gap (she called it Raddle Snake Galp) – maybe just the old way folks said it? I have always wondered if a Rattlesnake Gap was in Comanche County? The school named after it?
Anyway, the Kelley children were born in 1889, 1895, 1897 and 1899 – all in Comanche County, except grandmother – 1891 in Rising Star.

Any names on the old picture? My Great-Great Grandfather Jefferson Kelley was a school teacher in Comanche County from about 1880 till about 1908. Would love to know if he is the teacher in the photo. Would love to have a copy!!
    Thanks, Nancy

Missy Jones is a much better school expert than I am. I’m living with very little internet service at the moment, but text me at 325-280-9083 and I will give her your contact info.
