Missy, by the time I came along, it was the Texas Burger where a lot of us had standing orders, but I loved having an open campus. It was a nice break!

This post is about the school students in the 1950's. About the middle of the 1950's I was working at the Service Drug in town. Many students came to the drug store for lunch, we had wonderful chicken salad, tuna, pimento cheese sandwiches ( all home made) at lunch and many students had a standing order. (and the plate had potato chips and pickle slices.) We would have their plates on the counter, with their ticket when they walked in the door, along with their drink. They could eat fast and get back to school on time. does anyone remember this?

We traveled with Comanche National Bank bus tour group several years ago to Mount Vernon. My very best moment there was sitting on the porch, and looking out at the Potomac River, just as George Washington might have done. Being a volunteer at the Comanche Historical Museum, in our school room is an enlarged picture of Washington as I remember was hanging in the Gustine school rooms. I like to tell our students touring the school room that Washington was the "Father of our Country". Most of them have never heard of this or of him. And that is a shame, for our country was worth fighting for then and now. Students need to be taught of the sacrifices our early patriots and settlers made in forming our wonderful country.

Dennis, thank you for sharing some of your moments over there, and this helps me to better understand why my dad didn't know how to show or share his love with me and my brother and sisters. I remember our mom telling us, she would have to wake him up by shaking his feet and standind back because he would wake up ready to kill and I know now they were trained to not have feelings to hate the enemy. My dad fought in Korea, He was a marine and he wouldn't talk about the war. Thanks again for sharing.
