Good News
There has been a lot of bad news about Dublin in the local newspapers recently. And I agree that the city is facing some huge challenges. Sometimes they seem like insurmountable and impossible problems. However, I remain very optimistic about Dublin’s future. The reason for my optimism is that I was raised on the belief that as Americans, there isn’t anything we can’t do if we come together and fight hard. Our country, our state and our city has a great heritage of uniting and conquering.
An incident last year that comes to mind actually went beyond our country. You will remember the miners that were trapped underground in Chile. The leader of that country never waivered in his belief that a solution would be found to rescue those miners alive. His dedication was not only inspiring but contagious. The families and citizens of his country came together before our very eyes. Engineers and corporations in America were vital in inventing a process to reach and rescue the miners with no thoughts of personal gain. Seeing each one of those miners rescued alive was amazing.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Queen Victoria: “We are not interested in the possibilities of defeat. They do not exist.” Indeed, there is no choice in the sewer and water issue that must be addressed. This is not a matter that we can campaign for or against and have a vote. We MUST do whatever is required because the only other option is very grim—the State of Texas will take over and the implications of that are unthinkable.
One of my duties as mayor of Dublin is to be a cheerleader, so here goes: The good news is that we have a great city staff and consultants that are working diligently to solve the sewer and water problems that we are facing. We have a great City Council who is working along side the city staff and is intelligent and supportive. And most importantly, Dublin has great citizens who will rise to the task that is before us. I truly believe that our community will come together and work together to solve our problems whatever they may be. “When times get tough, the tough get going…..we have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Let’s Go!

Although I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know a lot about the inner workings of Dublin, I can tell you that I have been terribly impressed with what I’ve seen so far. I have no doubt that when the people with ties to Dublin pull together, they can accomplish anything! Good luck!!!
Thank you, Mayor Becky, for your words of encouragement. We look forward to changing negative headlines to positive ones. We also look forward to becoming a “business friendly” community that is proud of all we have to offer — and willing and eager to share it. And we hope to see a continuation of the good work that has been done by volunteers to “put a shine” on Dublin’s face by cleaning up and sprucing up. It’s vital that the first impression we make on visitors should be one that reflects our pride. Lead the way, Mrs. Mayor, and we will follow you down the path of renewed optimism for our wonderful little town.
Lots of good things are going on in Dublin. We are so looking forward to the Dublin Public Library reopening on July 5. After receiving a Tocker Grant the library is getting a new circulation desk & new shelving. New carpet was being installed today.
Through the Rodeo Hertiage Museum, we are gathering oral histories of people who remember Dublin from the “rodeo days” of 1940-1960. A Rodeo Reunion is being planned for October 1 in connection with Arena Fest 2011 a day of family activities at the Dublin City Park. It’s going to be a great event.
And those are just two of the great things happening in our hometown!
